Viewers of the current Jane Austen series on PBS will likewise enjoy Remarkable Creatures, by Tracy Chevalier. The book is a fictionalized account of the life of the great fossil hunter, Mary Anning, as well as that of her life-long friend, the middle-class spinster, Elizabeth Philpot. The depiction of these women, each with marked class differences, is vibrant; the reader is thrust into the world of early nineteenth century Britain and the complicated friendship of these two unusual women.

Remarkable Creatures explores the nature of female friendships, class and gender prejudices, as well as the tension between faith and science in a pre-Darvinian world.

A potential book club favorite, this title will appeal to Austen fans as well as lovers of historical fiction. Tracy Chevalier, author of Girl With a Pearl Earring, has, once-again, brought historical figures to life.
